The Hartmans

Joel and Gwen Hartman

Joel and Gwen serve God with New Tribes Missions. They make their home in Northern Brazil, South America, near the Venezuela border.

Northern Brazil is home to the Amazon regions and houses several known and unknown indigenous peoples. The Hartman’s are 200 miles away from the nearest town of Boa Vista. Shopping in this family requires much planning and organization because they are only able to go every month in a small plane.

The Hartman’s have been working with the Yanomamo tribe since 1990, bringing the gospel to them. They are also revising and editing biblical lessons and scriptures into the Yanomamo language. During some of the free time they work in the medical clinic, help in a literacy program, and help the economic development of the tribe.

Joel and Gwen are the parents of three children, Sarah, David, and Natalie. Joel and Gwen must endure the hardship of having their children stay in a boarding school for missionary children for most of the year. The children come and help their parents during the summer and during winter holidays.
